Announced in August on the Masters official website in an article, Billy Payne retired as Chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament. His last day is the beginning of the club season on October 16, 2017. He was Chairman for 11 years, since May 21, 2006.
Reflecting on Payne
Payne really moved the Augusta National Golf Club in such great and positive directions of growth. The article tells how he “was a collaborative presence, bringing together golf’s leading institutions to implement new ways to expand the reach of the game, such as his vision for the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Latin America Amateur Championship and the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship. He worked to make the sport more welcoming, including the addition of women into the Club’s membership and the creation of the popular Junior Pass Program during the Masters.”
Welcome, Fred Ridley
As Payne assumes the title of Chairman Emeritus, his good friend Fred Ridley will take the lead. In the video from the article, you can watch as Payne expresses how much Ridley loves and certainly deserves to lead the Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Tournament. We look forward to seeing Ridley thrive as Chairman!
We encourage you to read the article and watch the video “Chairman Billy Payne: A Lasting Legacy” from the Masters Tournament website.
